Felting Workshop

Saturday, Sept 24. Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 6 students. $25. Registration required.

 

Join multimedia artist Alison McCreesh as she introduces you to the versitile textile medim of felting.

After graduating with a Interdisciplinary Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi (2009), Alison moved to Yellowknife where she currently lives and works as a fiber artist, cartoonist and illustrator.   Her work has been show in a selection of shows and publications in Northern and Eastern Canada.  Most recently, she has been a participating artist in the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik and in the Yukon Riverside Art Festival in Dawson City.   

 

Wire Jewelry Making
Saturday, Sept 24. Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 5 students. $25. Registration required.

Patrice Tremblay will show you the skills you need to make beautiful jewelry with simple tools.

Patrice learned how to work with wire when he was travelling in Mexico - where local artisans taught him to create great things from little means. He also combines wool, found rocks and fossils, small carvings, feathers and semi precious stones with the wire to create unique wearable art pieces. Every piece is completely hand made: the chains, the clasps, the stone settings, etc. He has participated in many shows and festivals in the NWT.

 

Copper/Silver Earings
Saturday, Sept 24. Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 4 students. $20. Registration required.

Local silversmith Kris Schlagintweit will work 1 on 1 with you to help you create a pair of earings using traditional silversmithing techniques.

 

 

Beading - Traditional and Non-Traditional Styles
Saturday, Sept 24. Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 5 students. $20. Registration required.

Valerie Conrad's unique beading skills and designs will inspire you to push the boundaries of what you would normally do with beading.

 

Handmade Books
Saturday, Oct 1 Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 8 students. $20. Registration required.

Marcus Jackson will show you a number of ways to make your very own books by hand. During the workshop, you will make 2-3 books using various techniques with specific lessons in binding and stitching.

Marcus graduated from the print media program at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2010. He has been making handmade and altered books for over 5 years. You can see more of his work on his website: www.luckyjackpress.com

 

Collage & Mixed Media
Saturday, Oct 1 Noon-4pm. At the ARCC
Max 13 students. $ By Donation. Registration required

Brandon Marsh is an artist who loves to make art with every-day materials. He'll show you the texhniques behind successful collage, stencil and mixed media. This workshop promises to be an adventure with a spontanious and exploratory theme.

Brandon works in the areas of new media and collage, focusing on found materials to give them new life as works of ephemeral art.

 

Painting Birds
Saturday, Oct 1 Noon-4pm. At the ARCC

Diane Boudreau will help you discover your inner artist when you paint large wood cut-outs of local birds.

Diane is an artist-biologist who's lived in Yellowknife since 2000. She supports public art outside by creating various projects with the support of NWT Arts Council. She also does land-art, murals, metal sculpture, core samples boxes painting. In 2010 , she's done workshops in the Northern communities of NWT as well as Cape Dorset, Nunavut, and has participated in the Great Northern Art Festival in Inuvik and Open Sky festival in Fort Simpson.

Artist Talk

Ft. Smith installation artist Nathalie Lavoie will discuss the process behind some of the works exhibited in "Architecture of Temporality", currently on view at the museum. She will also offer a glimpse on her current research. In addition, each person who attends will receive a souvenir!

Panel Forum: Exposing Your Art to a Larger Market

Marcus Jackson is a writer, printmaker, and book artist. He graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design print media program in 2010. The majority of his work is print based but he also creates sculptural objects from natural and recycled materials, makes his own paper and books, and is teaching himself the art of taxidermy.  His current practice explores hunting and trapping culture and the nature of the human/animal relationship. He is hoping someone will take him on his first hunting trip this year. Marcus has exhibited his work across Alberta and British Columbia, as well as Seattle, Brooklyn, Portland, New Orleans, and overseas in Wroclaw, Poland. Terrance Pamplin was born in Ontario and grew up in Montreal. He attended the museum school of fine arts and then began his career in the graphic arts industry He moved to Yellowknife in 1981 and fell in love with the North, feeling he truly had come home. Terry is very versatile artist when it comes to mediums and he has worked with many. Oil, pastels, acrylics, found objects, printmaking, collage, ice sculpture are just a few of the mediums he has worked in.  Some artist once told him that he had tried all his life to paint like a child. Terry likes to bring his childlike personality to his studio, and let him go. “I play with my art and try to have fun, I mean if it isn’t fun then give it the fuck up!”

Diane Boudreau combines her background in biology and environmental design with paintings and urban art installations that are truly reflective of her commitment to her work, the environment and her belief that art belongs to all of us. She moved to Yellowknife in 2000 where she started working with rocks and other natural materials to create her Land Art.  Since 2004, she has been doing public art on an exterior wall downtown in Yellowknife. In addition to Diane’s mural p projects she gives painting workshops to the communities around Inuvik. She attends several festivals a year to give workshops. These festivals include the Open Sky festival in Fort Simpson, NT and the Great Northern Arts festival in Inuvik.  Diane is also known for her personal body of work of paintings on core sample boxes. Some of these works can be seen on display at the Visitor Centre in Yellowknife.

 Jennifer Walden is a successful visual artist living and working in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Her distinctive style explores Canadian and Northern life through people, wildlife and topography. She works primarily in acrylics, using vibrant colour, rich texture, dynamic line and three-dimensional relief to create a truly sensual experience.

Walden’s work has been widely acclaimed across northern and western Canada and has been purchased by collectors from around the world. She has been selected to represent the Northwest Territories at various events including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver where her work was exhibited to over 215,000 visitors. In 2008 she received the Great Northern Arts Festival “Most Promising Emerging Artist in a 2 Dimensional Media” award and her painting “Herd Migration”  was selected by Northwest Tel to grace the cover for the 2009/2010 Northwest Territories telephone book.  Walden’s paintings are currently displayed at The Gallery on 47th in Yellowknife, the Copper Moon Gallery in Whitehorse, and the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver.

Monique Robert is a professional sculptor, painter and muralist who possesses an uncanny sense of anatomy, subject composition and light dynamics. These attributes have defined her paintings, papier mâché and bone art for over twenty five years.  Monique’s distinctive contributions include many museum exhibit displays, commissioned and personal works, on display and for sale in venues throughout Canada and the United States.
